3The Sky is Pink
There is a sense of inevitability about the story. But the film manages to strike a balance during some of the toughest emotional scenes, but without the melodrama expected in such storylines.
One of the two major factors that works for the film is that it never loses focus on what it intends to do to its audience. And the second is the star cast. Shonali Bose’s The Sky Is Pink is not so much about death as it is about several shades of grieving – for those who’re left behind.
To grieve or not to grieve, and then, how to grieve, exactly? Should you wrap yourself up in their memories, their smell, and believe they’re still with you? Or should you distance yourself, selfishly protect yourself from being swept away, even at the cost of being misunderstood as dispassionate? That is the question.
Niren and Aditi’s story – of falling in love with their courtship, Aditi giving up her South Delhi life for an East Delhi chhajja, Niren surrendering himself to an untameable tigress, which frankly, he enjoys and wouldn’t want to change – all help build these two characters who carry the film on their able shoulders. And, adds the pink in what could have otherwise been a very dark sky.

Masaan has been a bridge between the two cities. Directed by debutant Neeraj Ghaywan, the film narrates the stories of four characters whose lives are woven into the social fabric of Benaras and constricted by it.
A boy from a lower caste who falls in love with a girl from an upper caste; a daughter driven by feelings of guilt from a sexual encounter; a father who has lost his moral compass; and a young boy in search of family.
“Benares, the holy city on the banks of the Ganges, reserves a cruel punishment for those who play with moral traditions,” reads Masaan’s description.
Four lives intersect along the Ganges: a low caste boy in hopeless love, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy, a hapless father with fading morality, and a spirited child yearning for a family, longing to escape the moral constructs of a small-town.
A series of unprecedented events find these lives to reflect and explore their desires through each other.

Care of Kancharapalem is a rare Telugu film that takes us beyond the habitual cinematic settings to familiarise us with the sights, sounds, and lives of people of a locality. In those narrow lanes of Kancharapalem in Vizag, there’s no place for secrets.
Everyone goes about their lives and yet they are bothered about what’s happening (or not happening) in someone else’s life. Director Venkatesh Maha makes an emphatic debut. He leads us into Kancharapalem as the opening song raises questions about life.
