9The Motorcycle Diaries
This leisurely drama follows a real-life 1952 road trip by two young men across South America. One of them, Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, will later become a Communist revolutionary and Fidel Castro cohort nicknamed “Che.” Ernesto is a 23-year-old medical student from a privileged Buenos Aires background who joins pal Alberto for a four-month tour of South America to celebrate Alberto’s 30th birthday and give Ernesto some time with his girlfriend.
They ride on Alberto’s 1939 motorbike. In Chile, the vehicle conks out for good, and Ernesto’s girlfriend breaks up with him via letter. The pair now hike overland, finding shelter and trying to keep to their itinerary, which ends with a humanitarian visit to a leprosy clinic.
There’s no hokey stroke-of-lightning moment when Ernesto realizes his destiny, just little incidents in which the pair witness injustice, usually against the native Indians, the poor, or anyone opposing corporations or landowners. Alberto is mostly into scamming and chasing girls, but an epilogue explains that his trip to the future Che changed Alberto’s life forever.

Like the memoir on which it’s based, Wild is a touching exploration of a woman’s life-changing 1,000-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. In her mid-20s and in a state of crisis, Cheryl Strayed sees a PCT guidebook while shopping for pregnancy tests in a pharmacy.
Once her divorce is final, she’s off heroin, and she’s aborted an unplanned pregnancy. Cheryl decides to pack an oversized backpack with newly purchased camping gear and hike 1,000 miles of the trail. Her goal? To once again become the woman that her dearly departed mother raised her to become, rather than the shell of a person she’d become.
During her solo trek, Cheryl reflects on her past, both the good (her beautiful mother and Cheryl’s faithful and long-suffering ex-husband) and the bad (her mother’s death, Cheryl’s string of affairs, and subsequent drug abuse). Although she encounters others on and off the trail, the movie, even more than the book, focuses on Cheryl battling her demons with every labored step.

Ricky is just starting to get used to his new “auntie” and “uncle” when circumstances leave Ricky and Hec on their own. With child protection services — led by humorless caseworker Paula — prepared to take Ricky to juvenile detention, the boy instead heads into the bush with his dog Tupac.
Hec follows him, but after an accident, the two must stay in the bush so long that the authorities launch a manhunt to find Ricky and his alleged “kidnapper.” The odd couple, of course, believes that staying in the bush and living off the land is the only way to avoid capture.

2Into The Wild
Based on Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction best-seller Into the Wild, Sean Penn’s adaptation martyrs Christopher McCandless as an intelligent, idealistic, 24-year-old college graduate who gives his trust fund to Oxfam, burns the remainder of his cash and takes off on an extended journey into the wilderness.
Chris makes a life-changing impression on everyone he meets, including two hippies; a grain elevator foreman (Vince Vaughn); a 16-year-old folk singer; and, most touchingly, a lonely elderly man. Despite the seemingly deep human connections he fosters throughout his tramping days, Chris is single-mindedly focused on one goal: getting to Alaska and living off the land for a few months all by himself.
In fact, he arrives there early in the film, camping out in a “magic” bus that had been parked long ago as a crude base camp; flashbacks fill in the two years leading up to that point.
The back-and-forth between Chris’ days in Alaska and his time as Alexander the hitchhiker is effective, poignantly reminding the viewer of the kind of big-hearted man he could have resumed being had he been able to walk back out of the wilderness.

Jesse, an American, has been traveling around Europe on his own aimlessly for the past few weeks on his Eurail pass. His last stop, where he is currently heading, is Vienna, from where he will catch a flight home tomorrow morning. Celine, a Parisienne, had been in Budapest visiting her grandmother.
She is currently heading back to Paris to resume her studies at the Sorbonne. Jesse and Celine meet by chance on the same westbound train out of Budapest. The connection they feel from their short conversation on the train is enough for Jesse to suggest at the last minute that she get off the train with him in Vienna and that they spend time together in Vienna – just wandering around the city as was his original plan as he doesn’t have the money for a hotel – before he needs to go to the airport, and at which time she will board the next train to Paris.
If it ends up she feels uncomfortable with him as time progresses, she could ditch him at any point. Celine agrees. As they wander from place to place in Vienna, they talk about their philosophies of life and love.
They also talk about logistical issues regarding their time, such as why Jesse was in Europe, to begin with, what they are feeling for each other if there is a future for them together, and if so what that future may look like taking into consideration both their current lots in life.
