5The Two Popes

The Two Popes - Wikipedia

Traditionalist Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Anthony Hopkins) and reformist Cardinal Julio Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) are the top leaders in the Catholic Church. But they have diverging views on how theology should be interpreted.

After Ratzinger is selected to replace Pope John Paul II, he takes the church deeper into conservatism. But when Bergoglio turns in his letter of resignation, Ratzinger — now Pope Benedict XVI — invites Bergoglio to his summer residence, where he wants to talk about everything except the cardinal’s resignation.

Led by outstanding performances from its well-matched leads, The Two Popes draws absorbing drama from a pivotal moment in modern organized religion.

Klaus (film) - Wikipedia

The movie follows Jesper (voiced by Jason Schwartzman), a privileged young Postal Academy employee whose strict father, the Postmaster-General, punishes him with the most remote assignment possible: Smeerensburg, an island above the Arctic Circle.

Jesper can’t return to his pampered life at home until he processes 6,000 pieces of mail in one year. But upon arriving in Smeerensburg, it becomes clear that the citizens aren’t inclined to send correspondence: The town is built on resentment and recrimination, and the founding families are engaged in a War of the Roses-style feud.

Even the town’s one teacher, Alva (Rashida Jones), has turned into a fishmonger because the warring factions don’t send their kids to school to sit next to the enemy. After Jesper accidentally delivers a child’s letter to village hermit Klaus (J.K. Simmons), a carpenter and toymaker, Klaus asks Jesper to deliver a toy back to the child.

This gives Jesper a brilliant idea: Every kid who writes Klaus a letter should get a toy in response; that way, all the eager kids’ letters will eventually add up to his father’s quota.

10 Best Netflix Animated Shows You Must Watch

Roma (2018 film)

In 1971, Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) worked as a maid for a family in Mexico City’s Roma district, an emblematically middle-class neighborhood in Mexico City that is also known as Colonia Roma.

Cleo has a good relationship with the family’s three children, whom she takes care of, and things seem to be going well enough, despite the household’s obvious socioeconomic disparity (Cleo and Adela, the maids, live in a tiny room and can’t leave the lights on at night, while their employers have a very comfortable space with all sorts of amenities).

But the husband and wife’s relationship is under some strain, and before long the husband departs, leaving Sofia (Marina de Tavira) in charge. Meanwhile, Cleo becomes involved with a young man named Fermin (Jorge Antonio Guerrero) and gets pregnant.

Fermin disappears, but Sofia lovingly agrees to help Cleo with the pregnancy. Cleo tracks down Fermin, who brushes her off, denying any involvement. Cleo and Sofia come from very different backgrounds, but they decide to join forces to raise the kids.

Meanwhile, student protests turn violent all over the city, eventually becoming what is now known as the Corpus Christi Massacre (taking place just three years after another violent episode in Tlatelolco) — and Cleo finds herself facing her deepest fears in more ways than one.

7 Netflix Underrated Movies You Must Watch Now

Marriage Story

One of the best things I can say about Noah Baumbach’s excellent new movie Marriage Story is that even if I wasn’t a child of divorce or if I wasn’t married now, I’d still find it emotionally overwhelming because he makes me care so deeply about the two people at the core of this story.

Marriage Story doesn’t function as a screed against marriage or divorce. The film isn’t trying to make its divorce stand in as a prime example for all divorces.

What Marriage Story shows is that divorce is where love and hate collide, and ending a marriage isn’t as simple as flipping a switch.

Led by astounding performances from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson with some terrific supporting work from Laura Dern and Alan Alda, Marriage Story shows the emotional warfare between a couple not in broad, melodramatic strokes, but where the ground is constantly shifting beneath everyone’s feet.
